Since there was no Oporto insight and that was what I felt like I decided to give Red Lea in the Stockland Mega Centre at Glendale, Newcastle a go. This place seemed to have every other shop there so it was surprising to see no Oporto. Anyway, I decided to order half a quarter and chips but they took so long to come to the counter that I changed it to a half for a couple of dollars more. It was $8.55 to be exact to get half a chicken, a generous serving of fries and a bottled drink.
I’m not sure why they took so long but one customer who was there before me walked away. It took them at least 5 minutes to attend the takeaway counter. When the staff did come out, there was about three of them that all came out together. The woman apologised for the wait while she was friendly as she served me.
I was reasonably happy with the meal but I would have enjoyed some type of sauce like you have at Oporto. The fries seemed to have been cooked a bit earlier but were at least hot and there was a generous serving.
The place seemed clean and the food was reasonable but it was just a bit strange having to wait so long although it didn’t bother me too much since I was not in a hurry, thank goodness!
Red Lea Wallsend Stockland Shopping Centre
Reviewed February 19th 2011 – I had been going here for a several months to have lunch while shopping. Most often the service and food was really good. Unfortunately that all changed today when I decided to have a late lunch. I asked the bloke serving if I could still order a 1/4 of chicken and chips as it looked like they didn’t have a lot left. He said I could but they only had a leg piece left. I said that would be ok (even though I usually order a breast piece).
The order came with hot chips that were good. Unfortunately the chicken was not so good. I started to eat it and half way through I realized it had probably being sitting in the tray for most of the day as it looked old and stale. Worse though was that it was very rubbery and I realized it was not cooked properly. There was also a big piece of fat sticking out of it and the whole thing was very unappetizing. I was hesitant to take it back as I do eat there often but I refused to accept this was served to me. So I took it back and told the guy I was not happy and would like a refund. He had to go and talk to his supervisor and eventually came back and offered me a refund for the chicken only. That was fair enough and I had enjoyed the fries.
The problem is though I don’t think they understood that this was not about me getting a refund, it was about them serving crap food. I also got no apology and actually was made to feel like it was part my fault as he said that the leg is not as tender as the breast. I told him that that was not acceptable to be served something that is not cooked properly and is so tough I can’t eat it.
I would probably never go there now after that.
