Oporto, Westfield Plaza, Kotara, Newcastle NSW

Having just arrived I was quite hungry as it was early afternoon and I still had not eaten lunch. So I wandered up to the Food court in the Westfield Plaza in Kotara and decided to give Oporto a go since I had a good feeling for it and my stomach seemed to be crying out for an Oporto burger after a month or more without.

I was greeted by a polite young man who took my order appropriately and within a few minutes I was given my order by a girl who smiled and thanked me. First impressions always go a long way to enjoying your meal so I was glad to get my meal with a smile.

I sat down to eat my Oporto double fillet Bondi meal and I know I was quite hungry but believe me, this was the best Oporto meal I can remember ever eating and I have eaten at many Oporto stores in several countries and many times.

Starting with the chips – they were absolute perfect, large and beautifully cooked, hot, crunchy but fresh and tasty.

Then the burger – it was also fabulous, the bun was super fresh and cooked perfectly, the fillets were deliciously cooked, hot and tasted amazing. This all sat on a very fresh, thick bed of the absolute freshest and gorgeous lettuce. The burger was not greasy or smothered in sauces, it was just right. In fact I would expect this meal to have come from a top restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised, obviously they have some great chefs working behind the scenes there.

Pizza Hut, George St Sydney

The Pizza Hutt is located in George Street right in the middle of the city next to a lot of fast food stores and across the road from the movie theaters. You have to walk up a steep flight of stairs and once there you can see the menu for eating in and take out.

Often you have to wait quite awhile in a que as there is only ever one girl on the front desk. She is not exactly friendly or that helpful either. I have to admit though it is one of my favorite spots for lunch in the city as it is comfortable wit pleasant views of the main street.

The food is quite acceptable, especially for a fast food pizza chain. I usually order a supreme Italian or vege pizza and if you don’t order any extras then it will cost around $12 to eat in or cheaper to take out.

Primo Cafe Bondi Junction

primo cafe
This fairly busy cafe is located on the east side of Oxford st in Bondi Junction directly across the road from the Westfield Mall Entrance by Borders. They offer mainly all day breakfast dishes for those on a budget although the prices are not that competitive.

The waitresses are friendly, mainly backpackers and it s quite a good location to have brunch. It’s a shame the food is not that good, it was very below average when we tried it, very greasy and old style. There were also quite a few flies which is not a good sign.

We order an all day breakfast which was served with soggy greasy tomatoes, very greasy nearly raw bacon and greasy fried eggs that were not cooked properly.

Overall our experience was not great, only the friendly waitresses stopped up from complaining but we would most certainly not recommend this place to anyone even those on a small income, too greasy and the food made us feel a bit sick to be honest.

Unfortunately there is nothing prime about the Primo Cafe in Bondi Junction.

Nandos Pitt St Mall, Sydney

I ordered a classic chicken burger with chips. The cost was about $12.30 although I could have paid $13.90 and I would have also got a drink. Eating out in Sydney is getting more expensive by the day. Lunch was on average $5-6 and maybe up to $7 or $8 with a drink less than a year ago, these days it seems $12 for lunch with a drink is what you can expect on average now. I think we are too easily gullible here in Australia, at least in Sydney where no one seems to mind or question the sudden rise in prices!

Anyway back to the food…. The burger was fresh and tasty but there seemed such little chicken and at the end I still had nearly 1/4 of a bun without any chicken. Not only are prices getting higher the food is much less. I also never seen any signs or information bout the source of the chicken meat. I wanted to know if it is organic and free range? Since there is no information on this then I presume it is not which makes it even more questionable how the price is so high!

If your prepared to pay then I would suggest looking at some of the even more expensive items on their menu, they probably taste great but the simple classic burger will not fulfill.

Otherwise friendly and clean looking place to eat, chips are quite ok too but again the price is high! Chips are hitting nearly $4 for a minimum serve here, what next, coffee at $10 a cup?

Nando’s Website

Dough Espresso – Westfield Mall Bondi Junction

They have a reasonable food selection but the staff are in their own world and treat customers like crap sometimes. The prices are ok and the location is great. Nice for a coffee and treat while shopping.

Victory coffee lounge Hurstville

This café is located just up from the Westfield shopping center in a handy location. They have a huge menu mainly catering for lunch & breakfast.

I was pretty hungry for lunch and I ordered a cheeseburger & coffee which only cost just over $8 which was a welcome change from over the Eastern Suburbs in Sydney.

They are very friendly & the Asian man who is probably the owner is just a little too friendly. They asked if I wanted tomato sauce on the burger, I said just a little but it came nearly smothered in it. Besides that the burger was fresh & tasted good. Unfortunately the coffee was pretty crappy.

Overall, if you’re looking for somewhere inexpensive for lunch in Hurstville Sydney then this café is a good choice.

The Emporio Manly, Sydney

Driving towards Manly from the west side we seen this place easily & it looked quite busy which is always a good sign. They offer custom sandwiches, pasta dishes (microwaved unfortunately) and various wholesome foods for a platter.

The service was fast and efficient. I ordered a veal ravioli dish with a flat white. The coffee came in a good sized cup and tasted fine. The ravioli was fresh and enjoyable but nothing special.

Overall this was an enjoyable place to sop for lunch that is just minutes from Manly.

The Bamboodle Bar – Westfield Mall Bondi Junction

This clean & popular Asian food bar serves a variety of dishes including soups, coconut curry dishes, laska and noodles.

The place has friendly staff and the food is consistently fresh, tasty & delicious. You can also order freshly squeezed juices.

Top Value, highly recommended.

Ramen Kan – Bondi junction

This Asian restaurant is nearly always busy when I have gone past it which is a good sign. I have been meaning to visit this place which is located on the main road across from the Westfield mall.

Te Ramen Kan is modern, tidy and relaxing while the staff person was assertive & polite. I ordered a vegetable & chicken curry dish & it was delicious. It came in a thick soup that was Very tasty, it had noodles that appeared like el dente fettuccini & it worked well. The vegetables were not much more than carrots & onions while the chicken was cooked tenderly to perfection.

I look forward to going back to the Ramen Kan.

Neesies café Grill Bondi Junction

I have often visited this place for lunch to get a burger & chips. The food has always been good although the prices are quite high. Tonight I decided to visit there for dinner. I ordered T-bone steak with chips. For that much money it better be good. This section of the Bondi Junction mall on level 5 is a well designed place where you can select from a number of restaurants & cafes to find a cuisine to suit your tastes. It is also a relaxing & interesting place to eat.

The food was presented strangely with the chips on one plate & the steak on another with no salad besides some boring garnish of a few strands of lettuce & a tiny slice of tomato. The first thing I thought was that is not worth the $20 I paid.

The food was tasty but the steak was very under cooked so the meal overall was disappointing. For lunch I have trouble parting with $12 but I certainly won’t be paying that much there for an undercooked steak with chips.
